Cars like this don’t come along very often, even in exclusive auctions. But nevertheless, this 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350H Fastback, one of Carroll Shelby’s personal cars, is heading to auction later this month at Bonham’s Scottsdale, Arizona event without reserve. Powered by the small block 289 V8 with 306 hp and paired to a three-speed automatic transmission, the GT350H was part of an interesting experiment, so to speak.
Back in 1966, Shelby and Hertz Rental Car joined forces for the Rent-A-Racer program, meaning one could actually rent a Shelby. Not everyone could afford to buy one, but renting one for a day or so was totally doable for many. How much did it cost to rent? About $17 a day. This particular GT350H left the Shelby factory painted in its current Wimbledon White with LeMans stripes in Guardsman Blue. Some factory options include chrome Magnum wheel, a radio, and a brake booster. Combined total price tag, pre-delivery fee: $3,865. It was sent to Hertz in early 1966, but the following year it was sold to its first private owner. But it was its second owner who made some impressive modifications.
He outfitted the car with the ’65 GT350pod with tech and oil pressure gauge, R-Model apron and wheels, valve covers, radiator, roll bar, and a Berry Plastiglas rear spoiler. This work was clearly enough to impress Carroll Shelby himself because he bought the car from tis second owner and kept it in the Shelby collection ever since. It was also featured in Peterson’s Complete Ford Book and displayed at the Imperial Palace Automobile Collection in Las Vegas. Since 2008, it has been on display at Shelby Automobiles, also in Vegas. With the exception of the wheels, Shelby returned the car to its original spec. Given its unique history, it’s no wonder Bonhams estimates it’ll fetch between $150,000 and $200,000.
