This Corvette That Clocked Up Over 700,000 Miles Now Lives In A Museum
Incredibly, it still runs on its original 5.7-liter V8 engine.
Last year, you may remember the man who clocked up over 700,000 miles in a C5 Chevrolet Corvette. It was a testament to how long a car can last if it’s properly maintained. Its owner, Mark Blackwell, who lives near Jacksonville, Florida, clocked up 342,000 miles in his first Corvette. If that wasn’t already impressive, he traded it for a brand new red C5 Corvette back in 1999. Since then, he’s racked up 773,338 miles in his current Corvette and over one million miles in the two cars combined.
Now, his C5 Corvette has been given a well-deserved rest, as Blackwell has decided to donate it to the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky.
To rack up that many miles, Blackwell would have had to do around 43,000 miles per year and about 100 miles every day for 18 years.
It helps that he takes the Corvette on a long highway commute to Georgia and southern Florida for work. Most impressively, the 18-year old Corvette still runs on the same 5.7-liter V8 engine it was originally fitted with in the factory, though Blackwell had to replace the head gasket after doing around 750,000 miles. “If any car deserves to be in a museum, it’s this one,” said Blackwell. “For the miles it’s gone and the things it’s done for me.” He even attributes the car’s sharp handling for saving his life when a bumper fell off a semi-truck late at night forcing him to swerve into the median, blowing two tires in the process.
“Had to obviously get the tires replaced and the car towed in that night. But any other car, there was no way in the world that I would not have hit that bumper,” Blackwell said. “It’s a fabulous car, no complaints here.” Looking at the immaculate condition of the car, you wouldn’t think this Corvette is nearly 20 years old with over 700,000 miles on the clock.
