Mercedes-AMG GT R vs. Corvette Z06: Which Is Fastest on Track?

You might not have noticed that the Mercedes-AMG GT R and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 have a lot in common. They’re both front-engined, two-seat, rear-drive sports cars that have forced-induction V8s and rear transaxles. They even use the same exact Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. And as we can see from this track test video, they set remarkably similar lap times on track. Sport Auto brought together the two super coupes on Hockenheim’s club circuit in Germany to see how they stack up against each other.

If you need a refresher, the Z06 makes 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque from its 6.2-liter supercharged V8, which in this case, sends power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed manual transmission.

The AMG GT R makes just 577 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, but its engine is paired up with a fast-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Despite the AMG’s power deficit, this one is a true wicked battle! ┬áIf you want to find out the winner, press play and find out:
