Unrestored But Meticulous 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird Is Looking For A New Owner

Best Piece Of American NASCAR Memorabilia

This could be a “dream come true” moment for some. An unrestored 1970 Plymouth is looking for a new owner. Not just any Plymouth either. The Hemi Superbird. Curiously, the car was at an auction lately. In fact, back in December 2016, it was a part of the Mecum auction, but it did not find its new owner (despite some suggesting it will actually fetch $450,000 there).

Although almost 50 years old, this 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird actually looks quite handsome and well maintained. Its original Tor Red finish still covers it all. Save for the front nose cone which was painted and restored at a later date.

This 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird Has Been In A Dealership From 1970 to 1977

Back in the day when Plymouth competed with these in NASCAR, the rules of the championship required the company to make two road-going cars for each dealership. Apparently, Plymouth made 1,900 Superbirds at the time with this particular one being one of the most expensive yet. The car was in the dealership from 1970 when it was produced to 1977 when it was sold for $4,776.15.

Such a high-price kept it in the dealership, but a massive amount of additional equipment now makes it even more alluring to own. This 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird features the A13 aero package, tinted glass, remote outside mirror, 15-inch Rallye wheels, chrome exhaust tips, rear bumper guards, and special door-trim moldings. Furthermore, dual quad 426 Hemi engine and 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission make a case for it by themselves.

All the details about the Mecum auction are not exactly available. We do know, however, that Hagerty’s restoration experts concluded that with a little work, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird could achieve concourse levels. No wonder they estimated it reaching a price north of $400,000.

New auction, scheduled for mid-November in Las Vegas will most certainly seal the deal on this rather alluring Hemi Superbird.
