I want to start this out by saying that the Ford GT is not a slow car. With a supercharged 5.4L V8 from the factory floor, the car is already a force to be reckoned with. Now take that same GT and put it through Heffner Performance. Ask for the twin-turbo setup pretty please with sprinkles on top and you’re looking at a 1,000 HP twin-charged monster.
Now take the McLaren 720S – its 4.0L dual twin-scroll-turbo V8 puts down 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque to the pavement and rips through 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Whereas the GT is made of aluminum and weighs about 3,500 lbs, driver included, the 720S is a carbon-fiber spaceship weighing in at about 500 lbs under the GT.
Sure, the GT is the revival of a car that spanked Ferrari at Le Mans a few decades back, but McLaren has been running the F1 circuit since then and learning some handy tricks for their road-going supercars. Both cars have a rich racing pedigree, but Ford’s approach with the first-gen GT was basically to make a muscle supercar. It’s got brute force and that’s about it.
Onboard the McLaren, however, you’ll find a vast array of advanced technologies that help the 720S become an expert at putting power to asphalt. It’s down 300 hp but up 500 lbs and a bunch of fancy gadgets. Fancy gadgets, mind you, that allowed this 720S to absolutely walk even this monster Ford GT.
We will say this though, the GT is not lacking even a little bit in the sound department. We get a pretty sweet peek at the GT’s pipes before the festivities kick off as well as a few onboard clips and we’ve got to say, that thing sounds like an actual demon. In the best way possible.
The McLaren had a good, almost surgical and precise sound to it, but there’s just something special about the big fat V8 under the Ford’s hood. Sounds couldn’t save it, however, from being pulled on in both heats. In the first race, the cars keep a pretty good pace but it soon becomes clear that the McLaren’s lightning-fast shifting helped it secure its lead with each labored move of the GT’s stick.
Similarly, in the second heat, every time a gear is up for the GT, we see it sink just a little bit further back into the rearview. Surely you’re tired of hearing me talk about it though, so go ahead and enjoy it for yourself:
